a quick fash chat with ellie goulding

Ellie Goulding is a lot of fun. In fact, she's so much fun that this piece nearly didn't make it up here - listening back, our chat became largely indecipherable as we both got carried away with our Mulberry-infused girlie excitement (which doesn't translate half as well when sober, unfortunately).

With a mischievious glint in her eye and very edgy bleached hair, Goulding looks like a little ethereal pixie (in a good way!) So, being a sucker for a girl with an unusual style, I had to have a quick chin-wag with Ellie about all things fash:

Who’s your style inspiration?
Oh my goodness! I can’t think of my style icon! Actually, do you know who I really love? Chloe Sevigny. I love everything she wears. And like, she’s kind of like me, she’s not like, like supermodel, but I don’t know, she seems to always pull it off.

Do you like her line for Opening Ceremony then, have you ever bought anything from there?
No, I haven’t, but my stylist Lauren is here and she is like The One. She’s introduced me to trendy things, she’s amazing.

What’s the kind of look that you’re going for on your tour at the moment?
Every night I wear this Temperley jacket, it’s like a military jacket, and I kind of feel a bit powerful in it, so I’ve been really going for the military vibe.

So who are your favourite designers at the moment?
('Mulberry, Mulberry!' shouts her stylist) Yes, Mulberry. Antipodium. I like Temperley, as I said before, really loving Temperley. Was it Antipodium who did the hands top? That's really cool.

The Antipodium Power of the Glove top
And what’s been your fashion highlight this year?
Wearing that Antipodium hands top was a highlight. And last night, I was at a film premier and I wore a D&G suit and it was amazing.

Ellie Sung: Guns and Horses, wistfully and wonderfully
Ellie left me wanting: to buy the Alice by Temperley Game Jacket.

at the mulberry bash: jaime winstone

Jaime Winstone is a girl after my own heart: she shops at the speed of light, she likes a bevvy (especially when it's a sweet Mulberry inspired cocktail concoction) and she isn't afraid of the canapés. And she is tiny. Amazing.

I had a quick chat with her about all things fashion-shaped whilst gazing enviously at her fascinating headpiece, which she told me was from Lily Allen's shop, Lucy In Disguise.

You’ve got a very quirky style, who are your style inspirations?
I guess people who inspire me are people who are comfortable in their own skin - Bowie, people like that. People who set their own standard.

What’s been your fashion highlight so far this year?
Probably becoming absorbed in the sixties with Made in Dagenham, I loved the hot pants and the sixties style influences.

And who are your favourite designers at the moment?
I love Dominic Jones - he’s a jewellery designer; Hannah Marshall; Lulu Kennedy. I really love independent, up and coming designers as well.

There’s loads, obviously Mulberry - they've got some really great stuff going on at the moment. Acne - really, really loving their stuff at the moment. I don’t kind of stick to one, it’s not about who's in, it’s about who’s designing something interesting.

Jaime bought: All the family Mulberry christmas pressies (lucky Ray - jealous)
We listened to: Sunday Girl acoustic set and an impromptu performance by Ellie Goulding

fashion raccoon: meeting daisy lowe

In the midst of djing, buying Christmas presents with Jaime Winstone and eating mini victoria sponge cakes at the Mulberry Manchester store launch, the lovely Daisy Lowe agreed to have a chat with me about fashion:

So, who or what would you say is your style inspiration at the moment?

I don’t really have a style inspiration...

Who’s your favourite designer?

I love what Christopher Kane’s doing at the moment. And obviously loving Mulberry!

What’s your favourite Mulberry bag?

Oooh I love the Alexa, of course! And I love all of the holdalls - I travel everywhere with them.

What’s been your fashion highlight this year?

I really enjoyed going to the British Fashion Awards. I just loved wearing that Elie Saab dress and like seeing all the amazing gowns that everyone was wearing.

And your line for Morgan, have you enjoyed doing that?

I LOVED doing that, it’s one of the best things I have done with my time so far, and apparently it’s going really well.

And your mum’s fashion line, that’s been going really well too hasn’t it?

Brilliant. It’s been going really well.  I mean literally what she has done is incredible. To make dresses that look like that, that feel like that, that hang like that, and yet cost hardly any money at all...and they keep - I mean, I’ve been wearing mine since she first started and I still wear them today, I just think that they’re incredible.

Daisy wore: Mulberry Peter Pan dress and Tillie Hobo
We drank: (Potent) Mulberry strawberry cocktails
We ate: Mini Shepherds Pies
We floated home with: Gold foil helium Bayswater balloons

to aspire

After winning the award in 2005 for her notable impact as Creative Director at Chloe, last night Phoebe Philo rightly scooped the British Designer of the Year Award again for creating the most covetable line in French fashion with Celine.

Neat and slick and very sexy, Celine is enjoying its moment as the luxe label du jour under the transformative influence of Philo. From the strong funnel necks that create that natural cool Celine stance (tall and proud), to the bold strictness of the oil shiny leather skirts, Philo creates clothes that speak in quiet, considered and therefore very powerful tones.

These clothes declare that the wearer knows the importance of simplicity and measurement. These clothes speak of consideration and intelligence. These clothes are, in short, created for the woman that all women aspire to be.  And I suppose that is the whole point of buying designer pieces.

I LOVED her funnel coats and lean pants and long leather boots from her AW10 collection, but am even more excited about the SS11 Resort collection:

Block colour, structured shifts, the flash of a neon accessory, and an expert moulding of the trickiest summer staple: white. Brilliant stuff.

There was a good interview with Philo in the FT in October that proved pretty much what everyone already knew: the clothes are unashamadly a reflection of her own aspirations, her desire of living with a pared-down but elegant and utterly simple luxury that lasts: “I wanted something that felt honest, that was a mixture of what I want to wear and how I want to live. I felt it needed to be quite simple and very real.” And in the meantime, it's a reality that we can all enjoy dreaming of whilst enjoying looking at these beautiful clothes...

topmock

Topshop's shoe department is looking pleasingly inspired these days. Wanted Stella's nude patent slingback?

I know I did, and Topshop's Jemima Kitten Heel is a dead ringer (although for some reason they look brown on the website's picture, but they're perfectly nude in real life):

Kapoor Asymetric Slingback £365
Jemima Plain Kitten Points £55

And I don't think it's an accident that these Layla shoes have a happy hint of Miu Miu about them.

Layla shoe £65

Miu Miu Satin Platform Pumps £375

And for those who dress appropriately for the weather, now is the time that you're wishing you had a pair of Viv's Pirate Boots right? Well, Topshop know this and have a pair very similar in for £85. Trusty Topshop.

Vivienne Westwood Black Suede Pirate Boots £234

hooded warrior

In these perilous conditions, one needs to protect rosy cheeks. And what better way to protect than with the humble hood, and stylishly too, with a little help from a new name on the street, Jiwon Ree. Having worked with the late Alexander McQueen, who Ree is an obvious fan of, the Korean born designer is now Art Director of knitwear at London based Jas M.B.

Amautit Tassel Cardigan £390
Woodland greens, charred greys, thick fringes, Rapunzel plaits - this is the stuff of dreamy warm winter fairytales.
